Who is Beelzebub and what does he/she have to do with the “Lord of the Flies”? (5) Why do you think Simon is the one whom Golding selected to have a confrontation with the “Lord of the Flies”? (speak to Simon’s character, nature and disposition—and consider the literary term FOIL) (5). Finally, critics argue that through this confrontation, Golding is alluding to a famous story from the bible. Briefly explain this story.  Do you agree? (5)

"I AM" Poem

“I AM” Portrait Poem
An autobiographical poem is personal—it reveals something about the person writing the poem. For this task, you will be stepping into the mind of a character from Lord of the Flies and exploring his deepest thoughts through an “I AM” poem. It does not have to rhyme, but for this assignment you must follow the format below.  You can earn bonus points for highlighting and labeling any stylistic devices (alliteration, asyndeton, metaphor, personification, etc.) you create in the poem.

I AM ____________

FIRST STANZA
I am (two special characteristics you have)
I wonder (something you are actually curious about)
I hear (an imaginary sound)
I see (an imaginary sight)
I want (an actual desire)
I am (the first line of the poem repeated)

SECOND STANZA

I pretend (something you actually pretend to do)
I feel (a feeling about something imaginary)
I touch (an imaginary touch)
I worry (something that really bothers you)
I cry (something that makes you very sad)
I am (the first line of the poem repeated)

THIRD STANZA
I understand (something you know is true)
I say (something you believe in)
I dream (something you actually dream about)
I try (something you really make an effort about)
I hope (something you actually hope for)
I am (the first line of the poem repeated)

Online Response Groups: Visit EDMODO, click on "I'm a Student," and create an account (GROUP CODE = 3l3ir3 and you do not have to enter an email). Find the "I AM" poems of your response group members. Read their poems and offer constructive criticism; this will include at least one praise and one area for improvement!
